CHAPTER 31

About twenty minutes after Homer had located the body of Deputy Richmond, the divers with the sheriff’s office had arrived with a boat, and they had ferried Jerome, Baylor, and me to the eastern bank of the bayou, where all of the action had been taking place.

One of the divers hadn’t looked happy about Homer recovering the body of his comrade. While he hadn’t dared say anything directly to Homer, I did overhear him ask his captain why they’d been called out if some cowboy was going to jump in the bayou and do their job for them.

“Shut your mouth,” the captain had said. “It doesn’t matter who found Stan’s body. The important thing is that he was recovered before he started decomposing or the marine life got to him. This way, his family will get to hug him one last time.”

The original diver had clamped his mouth shut and nodded his apology. He had gulped a few minutes later when he’d seen Homer sitting in the back of the ambulance getting his burn wounds cleaned and rebandaged.

“Is that the same guy who also tried to save that girl from the burning car?” he had asked the captain of the dive team.

“He’s had an eventful first shift,” the captain had said with a nod.

“Wait, this is his first shift?” the diver had asked, seemingly not believing what he’d heard. “Like, first shift ever?”

“Yep.” The captain had stared wistfully at Homer. “If only I had two like him…”

I had chuckled to myself and turned to stuff Jerome into the back of Takecia’s patrol cruiser. She had arrived a few minutes earlier, right behind Melvin, and they were talking with Homer while he was being worked on.

Susan and Amy had also arrived a few minutes earlier. They had started processing the vehicle and the scene of the crash, while two of Sheriff Turner’s detectives had taken a boat across the bayou to begin processing the scene of the shootout between Homer and Jerome.

Keeping one eye on Jerome in the back of the patrol cruiser, I sidled up to the rear of the ambulance and leaned against a door. Homer looked up and his face fell.

“I’m really sorry about wasting ammo,” he said. “I guess the chief will have to take sixteen hours off my check.”

I scrunched up my face. “Huh?”

Melvin and Takecia burst out laughing.

“I told him we get docked one hour for every shot we miss in the line of duty,” Melvin said. “I told him it’s done to encourage firearms proficiency. You know, to keep innocent bystanders safe.”

I chuckled, but Homer seemed concerned. Not only did he say he was embarrassed for missing every shot he’d fired, but he expressed concern that he might’ve injured an innocent party.

“First off, you would’ve handled it differently if you were in the middle of downtown,” I said with confidence. “Secondly, Jerome Folse is worth more to us alive than dead. Had you killed him, we might never know what happened to Wess Griffin.
